The World's Largest
Displacement Crisis
Since April 2023, fighting between Sudan's army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has created what UN agencies now describe as the world's largest displacement and one of its worst hunger crises.

How it started
The war began on April 15, 2023 as a power struggle inside Sudan's ruling military. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan "Hemedti" Dagalo, had jointly overthrown Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and staged a coup against civilians in 2021.
They split over how and when to integrate the RSF into the regular army and over control of the transition to civilian rule. What started as a power grab has become a nationwide war, with intense battles engulfing Khartoum and spreading to Darfur, Kordofan, and Gezira.
What's happening now
Territory
A country divided
RSF controls most of Darfur (including El Fasher as of late October 2025), large parts of Kordofan, and significant territory in central Sudan. They captured the strategic Heglig oil field in December 2025, halting oil production. SAF holds much of eastern and northern Sudan and has retaken parts of Khartoum, but front lines remain fluid with no stable ceasefire.
Displacement
12–13 million forced from home
Around 9.5 million people are internally displaced across all 18 states. Over 2 million have fled to neighboring countries—Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Libya, and the Central African Republic. Many have been displaced multiple times, with nowhere safe to go.
Famine
Starvation as a weapon
About 25 million people—nearly half the population—need humanitarian assistance. Famine has been confirmed in several areas. Markets destroyed, farms abandoned, aid systematically blocked. Both sides have obstructed food and medical supplies, with RSF sieges blocking fuel and food into camps like Shangil Tobay.
Healthcare
Health systems collapsed
Hospitals have been bombed, occupied, and looted. In April 2025, RSF attacked Zamzam displacement camp, killing nine Relief International staff and more than 100 civilians. The Saudi Maternal Teaching Hospital in El Fasher was struck. Water, electricity, banking, and education have been severely disrupted.
Atrocities
Ethnic cleansing in Darfur
Mass killings, widespread burning of towns, and targeted violence against non-Arab communities have been documented. Reports detail killings, rape, and sexual slavery by RSF and allied militias, particularly in Khartoum and Darfur. Observers warn of ethnic cleansing and possible genocide.
"This is not a natural disaster. This is man-made suffering on an unimaginable scale. And the world has looked away."
— UN Emergency Relief Coordinator
Why hasn't it stopped?
Peace talks in Jeddah (May 2023) and Geneva (August 2024) have failed to produce lasting ceasefires. Both sides violated the "Jeddah Declaration" on humanitarian principles almost immediately.
Both SAF and RSF have repeatedly ruled out negotiations that would leave the other side intact, framing the conflict as "total war." Despite diplomatic pressure, sanctions, and UN resolutions, neither side has changed its military calculations.
Aid funding has lagged far behind needs. Multiple reports describe Sudan as a "forgotten" or under-reported crisis relative to its scale. Regional and Gulf actors have provided varying degrees of backing to different factions, complicating mediation.
